Ask a European (anything)

Hi. I don't know how many Europeans come to this forum, but I'm one  So if there's anything you'd like to know about European countries and languages, ask me (I speak Dutch and English, and a bit of German, French and Spanish). I live in The Netherlands by the way, a small country in western Europe.

Thanks but to be honest, European languages have much in common with eachother. So when you speak English you can learn German and Dutch more easily, and when you speak French you can learn Spanish more easily. I think you guys are supermen (and superwomen), because Chinese and English are very different
To compare: the differences between many European languages are smaller then those between Mandarin and Cantonese.

And I'm from a very small country, smaller then most Chinese provinces. There are only 30 million people worldwide who speak my native language (Dutch), so we just have to learn other languages.  And if I travel 150 kilometers from my house I'm allready in a German or French country.

One trick to learn many languages is to always try to understand how they are related to other languages. For example, I've learned some Latin at school (an old language, used in the Roman Empire 2000 years ago) and now I very often see that words in French and Spanish and even some in English are just changed versions of Latin words. Once you see such things you remember the words better.
And it really helps if you hear foreign languages as a child, so you get used to the sounds of the pronunciation. So if you have children, try to let them listen to foreign music and speech. It will give them a real advantage when learning languages at a later age.

Yes, although there are limitations. Softdrugs (less harmful drugs) are legal, but harddrugs (very addictive or dangerous drugs) are illegal. And people may only carry a small amount (a few gramms) of drugs with them on the street. But yea, we're still a bit exceptional with this policy  And it doesn't mean that everyone in Holland uses drugs, the percentage is actually lower then in some other European countries (where drugs are still illegal).

Prostitution is legal, right? How about euthanasia? Any other radical laws Holland is experimenting with?

You're right: prostitution is a legal profession, and taxed by the government. It is however limited to some parts of cities, while in small towns and villages it's usually not allowed to start a brothel. Otherwise residential neighbourhoods could deteriorate because of the brothels.
Euthanasia is also legal, but it has to be done in a very specific way: a qualified doctor must carry it out, and must proof that the patient is mortally ill and will soon die anyway (in a couple of weeks).

Another Dutch law that may seem radical is that marriage is not restricted to man+woman couples, so a marriage of two men or two women is also possible. Some other European countries also have plans to change marriage laws, but I think Holland is the only country that allready did this.

I wonder what kind of law will be next  I've heard of plans to allow poligamy (marrying with several partners), but this will probably take a while to be implemented.

it is not the most important thing for poligamy which can be allowed or not? Though it is illegal you know, lots of people have wife, sweeties,or girlfriends, anyway it is just a form in my opinion. If the guy(or girl) has a single-heart, even if the poligamy is legal,he(she) will not find any other partners.Contrarily...  the same way.

Oh, the Netherlands...beautiful place...good design

I never been there, tough. Only a few days in France Cote d'Azur and Barcelona during a short vacation.

Europe is a very nice place to live I believe....how is work in Neatherlands? It must be really an exciting time for young people to be able to work in any EU country nowadays and have the chance to enjoy different experiences and cultures.

In fact my general question would be how the unification has changed so far your way of life?

may I ask how old are you and what you do for a living...and for fun?

take care
